Putnam Stadium is showing signs of its 75 years of age. Repairs have been made over the years to keep the stadium a first-class venue, but the time has come to completely restore the historic site.
Ashland’s Putnam Stadium is 75 years old and in need of infrastructure repair. Joined by former and current Tomcats, efforts are under way to restore the historic stadium.
Putnam Stadium has been official designated with a historical marker just outside the front entrance to the stadium. It reads … “This stadium served the Ashland Public Schools. Built in 1937 for $6,500 as a WPA project, it was dedicated on Thanksgiving Day that same year. The Ashland High School Tomcats’ record of success includes 11 state championship. In 1944, the Tomcats played under the lights at Putnam Stadium for the first time.R
Here is a model that was constructed to show what the restored Putnam Stadium will look like. Some of the key highlights of the project are seen with a banked “TOMCATS” end zone as part of the totally enclosed structure.
Putnam Stadium was built in 1937 by WPA for $6,500. It was dedicated on Thanksgiving Day with a 22-0 win over Ceredo-Kenova. Now, after 75 years of dependable service, the stadium’s infrastructure is failing and in need of repair.
